Why the Sweatin’ For Sarah Salt Lake City 5k?

This Salt Lake City 5k race honors the memory of Sarah. Each year, in Sarah’s honor, we select a local cancer fighter who will receive all the proceeds from the event. Proceeds are strictly used for helping cover the high costs of treatment and recovery from cancer.

This Year’s Recipient:

This year’s race will benefit a very courageous, young mother, Chanda Ivie George in her continued fight with cancer. Last year more than 300 people gathered together on a beautiful morning to share their incredible support for two local women fighting cancer—Camille Hatfield and Chanda Ivie George.  Camille is currently in recovery and doing increasingly well. Chanda continues the ups and downs of her fight. We have the privilege to continue to show our support once again for Chanda.

The History of the Sweatin’ for Sarah Salt Lake City 5k

Sweatin’ for Sarah Salt Lake City 5k began in 2010 to help Sarah Hays Shurtz pay her medical bills after she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer on June 23, 2010.  Running was a passion of Sarah’s. Unfortunately, when she was diagnosed with cancer she quickly lost her ability to run and train. For her, this was one of the hardest parts of having cancer—losing her ability to do something she loved.

The first year we did the Sweatin’ for Sarah Salt Lake City 5k, Sarah was overwhelmed with emotion by the community support. With the amazingly positive uplift this had on Sarah’s spirits and outlook, we knew we couldn’t stop this 5k after her passing.

Sadly, Sarah lost her battle to cancer November 1, 2011.  She loved the Sweatin’ for Sarah Salt Lake City 5k race and was honored to know it would help her legacy live on.

The Sweatin’ for Sarah Salt Lake City 5k has now become a powerful way for the Salt Lake community to show support to local citizens who are fighting cancer.

Our Promise: Where the Sweatin’ for Sarah Donations Go

Sarah loved to help others, and one of her wishes was that 100% of all registration fees go to the chosen local who is fighting cancer to help cover their medical related bills. This donation allows us, as a community, to show our support to a local neighbor that we’re fighting with them by helping pay for their medical related bills.
